SAN FRANCISCO -- Rising interest rates are supposed to be an economic sedative, but the hyperactive real estate market has retained its vigor even as the prime lending rate has climbed to a nearly four-year high.

Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) -- German stocks fell, paced by Commerzbank AG, Hypo Real Estate AG and AWD Holding AG. The benchmark DAX Index slipped 12.94 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4928.75 as of 2:40 p.m. in Frankfurt, with 28 stocks falling, one stock rising and one unchanged.
